The Libyan Coast Guard rescued 61 illegal migrants and found 11 people, including a child, dead off the coast of Garrabulli on Tuesday. Since the collapse of Muammar Gaddafi’s administration in 2011, anarchy in Libya has led many African migrants to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European ports.
So far this year, Libyan officials have rescued or apprehended 4,335 illegal migrants, 310 of whom have perished and 227 of whom have gone missing.
