238 people detained during demonstrations in Kenya

Clashes broke out between the police and demonstrators during the anti-government demonstrations in Kenya, organized to react to the government due to the price increases in basic necessities and the depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to the demonstrators gathered around the government buildings. Following the turmoil, 31 officers were injured, and a total of 238 demonstrators were detained.

Claiming that last year’s elections were fraudulent, opposition leader Raila Odinga had called on Kenyans to take to the streets and express their anger against the government. Kenyan government officials, on the other hand, had stated that they would not make concessions to the protests supported by the opposition, and Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki had stated that anyone who tried to disrupt public order would be prosecuted.
