28-years-old black detainee suffocated after intervention of police and paramedics

Twenty-eight-year-old black Virginia Irvo Otieno, who was detained for theft in the USA on March 3, died as a result of the intervention of the police and staff to control him at a psychiatric hospital where he was brought from the Henrico County prison.

A lawsuit was filed against seven police officers and three paramedics on charges of murder. While two of the detained police officers were released on bail, the others are still in detention.

The forensic report for Otieno, who was exposed to disproportionate force for about 11 minutes, stated his cause of death as “asphyxiation.”

“My son was treated like a dog, even worse than a dog. I saw it with my own eyes in the video,” said Otieno’s mother, Caroline Ouko.
