700 to evacuated on la palma as lava threatens more households

The Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) Response Committee has ordered evacuation of more than 700 people in La Laguna. “We had to evacuate a new area. The lava is moving slowly. People should have time to take their personal belongings and anything of value,” an official said. Spanish airport operator AENA has announced that Palma Airport is open, but today 11 flights have been canceled and others delayed.

While lava has destroyed 600 hectares of land so far, around 6,700 island residents have been evacuated from their homes.
