airport workers go on Strike in Germany, flights canceled

Security personnel at airports in Berlin, Hannover, Hamburg and Bremen went on a 24-hour strike after the German labor union Verdi’s call to demand raises for public sector workers, airport ground handling workers, and security guards on the grounds that their salaries are insufficient in the face of rising living costs.

The union demanded a raise of 10.5 percent or at least 500 euros for employees, but no progress has been made in the negotiations between the two parties so far. New negotiations between the union and employers are expected to begin on March 27.

Flights were seriously disrupted by the strike at airports in Berlin, Hannover, Hamburg and Bremen.
