The ancient Roman obelisk, located in the Iznik district of Bursa, Türkiye, and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List, continues to stand in its original grandeur after two millennia. Nestled amidst peach gardens in Elbeyli village, 5 kilometers from Iznik, the obelisk has intrigued onlookers with its historical magnificence. Comprising five white marble blocks held together by iron wedges, the structure is aptly named an obelisk. Notably, the Greek inscription on the monument’s first stone reveals the identity of the individual commemorated: “C.Cassius Philiscus, son of C.Cassius Asklepiodotus, lived for 83 years.”
