Anti-government protests spread and intensify across Peru

Anti-government protests, which began after the impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo by Congress on December 7, spread to 41 states in Peru. Protesters want the resignation of Dina Boluarte, who became president after Castillo, and an early election.

Protesters tried to take over the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco and clashed with police. The police struck back with tear gas at the protesters, who blocked the road and set fire to a bus.

According to reports, 43 people were injured, 37 of whom were civilians, 6 of whom were police officers, and 1 person died. As a result of that, the number of people who have died in the protests since December has increased to 48, including one police officer.
