anti-vaccine protesters clash with police in french Guadeloupe

On the French island of Guadeloupe, one of the overseas territories of France, in the city of Abymes in the Pointe-a-Pitre region, anti-Covid-19 vaccine card demonstrations held yesterday. Protesters set up barricades in front of shops and some service stations. The unauthorized demonstration led to clashes between the protesters and the police. According to the statement made by the police and gendarmerie, a gendarme was wounded by a bullet, and 6 people were detained.

Christine Wilhem, director of the Basse-Terre Hospital Center, said that about 40 people tried to enter the hospital’s administration building. “During the unauthorized demonstrations and law enforcement operations in Abymes, stones and Molotov cocktails were thrown and fired at the police. One gendarme who was wounded by bullets was transferred to the hospital. The governor condemns these indescribable actions,” the Governor of Guadeloupe said. Pointe-a-Pitre Prosecutor’s Office stated that an investigation was launched into the incident, and at least 3 shots were detected during the protests and at least 1 store was looted.

The Covid-19 vaccine card will become mandatory for visitors in hospitals and nursing homes and patients who do not enter the hospital urgently, in restaurants, bars, cafes, weddings, seminars, trade fairs, as well as in long-distance public transportation, including trains, planes and buses. A negative PCR test result will not be accepted for access to these sites.
