In the capital city of Germany, civil society organizations such as Campact, Fridays for Future and Parents against the Right organized a demonstration in Berlin last night, attended by around 100,000 people, against increasing racist, fascist and far-right tendencies.
Some of the demonstrators, who said that they took to the streets to protect democracy ahead of the German general elections to be held on February 23, lit up the night with objects such as candles, torches and flashlights, while others lit up the night with strings of lights and flashlights from mobile phones.
“It is getting darker all around us. The AfD is on the verge of its biggest victory in the Bundestag elections. The far-right is inspired by Trump, who has recently moved into the White House and is attacking German democracy together with Elon Musk. The bosses of big tech companies are bowing to him and using their platforms for hatred, incitement and disinformation. On the other hand, in our neighboring Austria, the far-right Herbert Kickl wants to be elected as the ‘People’s Chancellor.’ But we are sticking together and in front of the Brandenburg Gate, we are creating a sea of light for democracy. We are resisting together,” said one speaker during the demonstration.
According to the latest election surveys, the Christian Unity Parties (CDU/CSU) are in first place with around 30 percent of the vote, while the far-right and anti-immigrant AfD Party has climbed to second place for the first time with 20 percent of the vote.
