Arrests Hit 625 as French High School Protests Escalate

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that 625 people have been arrested as nationwide high school protests continue to escalate. The demonstrations, driven by student frustration over overcrowded classes, teacher shortages, and severe classroom heat, have spread rapidly from the Paris region to cities across France. Several gatherings have turned violent, featuring barricaded school entrances, arson, and intense clashes with police. Condemning the “urban violence,” Nunez reported that 83 officers were injured across 356 affected schools. Education Minister Edouard Geffray noted that 119 students and staff were also hurt, stressing that “it is of utmost importance that our students… can return to their classrooms.”
