A 4-storey building collapsed in Mumbai, India, killing at least 14 people and injuring 27. Several people were trapped under the debris of the dilapidated building that collapsed on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

According to the city civic body, BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 14 of the 27 injured people were reported dead, nine were discharged after treatment, and the remaining four are undergoing treatment at the civic hospital. The BMC identified 337 dilapidated buildings across Mumbai ahead of the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. This is a decrease from 465 buildings last year.

Before the monsoon season, an annual survey of dilapidated buildings is conducted to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a building collapse. The BMC declared the five-decade-old structure that collapsed dilapidated around nine years ago in 2013. However, residents obtained a structural audit in 2016, which concluded that the building was repairable.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, who visited the site, stated that the city will investigate the incident and re-examine the structural auditor’s report.
