At Least 149 Killed in Brazil Floods

The devastating flood triggered by heavy rains on April 29 in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state has claimed the lives of 149 individuals, with 124 others still reported as missing. The Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense confirmed this increase in casualties, alongside staggering figures of displacement and property damage. Over 600 thousand people were forced to evacuate their homes, with approximately 155 thousand houses suffering damage. The flood has impacted a total of 2.1 million people in the state. Concerns mount as authorities anticipate record water levels in the Guaiba River, particularly affecting Porto Alegre, the state capital, in the coming days.
