A total of 54 migrants were killed and another 115 were injured after a truck carrying them crashed in the in the Chiapa de Corzo municipality, Chiapas state, Mexico official resources stated. The trailer of the truck, packed with mostly with Central American migrants, overturned after crashing into retaining wall and footbridge on the highway. Rescue teams, including the Red Cross, Fire Brigade and Civil Defense teams, were sent to the scene.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his sadness and condolences to the families of the victims. Many children were among the injured and were without their parents, eyewitnesses said. The Mexican National Institute of Migration stated that the funeral and similar expenses of those who lost their lives will be covered, and that the survivors will be given visitor visas for humanitarian reasons.
