BioNTech Ends COVID-19 Vaccine Production

German biotech giant BioNTech is permanently ceasing its COVID-19 vaccine production, transferring all future manufacturing to its US partner, Pfizer. Driven by plummeting post-pandemic demand and a recent quarterly loss exceeding €500 million, the company is launching a massive restructuring that will cut nearly 2,000 jobs and close several global facilities by 2027. Moving forward, BioNTech plans to focus its resources entirely on pioneering new treatments for cancer and other severe diseases. This major strategic shift follows the recent departure of the company’s renowned founders, Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci, who resigned earlier this year to pursue new ventures.
