boat sinks in Bangladesh: 24 died, 30 missing

Out of 70 to 80 passengers, 24 died and 30 went missing after a boat sank in Karatoya River in the Panchagarh district of Bangladesh at 15:00 local time. Seventeen were rescued in the incident. According to Boda district manager Soleman Ali, the boat, which was carrying passengers mostly consisting of women and children, was heading to Bageshwori Temple and it started lurching just after it departed.

Ali also said that the funerals will be given to the casualties’ families after identification, and they will receive 20 thousand Bangladeshi takas.

The footage of the incident, which was also posted online, showed that the passengers’ count clearly exceeded the limits of the boat.
