Byzantine Church and Ancient Water System Unearthed in Türkiye

Excavations at the Konuralp Ancient Theater, known as the Türkiye’s “Ephesus of the Western Black Sea,” have revealed a Byzantine-era church structure and an extensive water system. Unearthed by Düzce Municipality, the infrastructure includes baked clay pipes of varying sizes, likely used for both public and residential structures. Konuralp Museum Director İhsan Aslan noted that the system, possibly constructed after the theater’s decline in the 4th century, connects to a nearby spring. Efforts are underway to restore water flow to the original fountain, adding to the historical significance of the region.
