The police reported that 587 Byzantine-era artifacts were seized in the home of an elderly couple in Athens, Greece’s capital. Upon a notice, the police conducted an operation on the couple’s house, aged 76 and 85, and seized the historical artifacts in the secret compartment mentioned in the notice. There are many reliefs, sculptures and paintings from the Hellenistic and Early Byzantine period among the recovered artifacts, authorities stated. The works were delivered to the Directorate of Documentation and Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
The elderly couple, who was sued for violating the legislation on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage, was referred to the court after their health checks.
