Çanakkale Wildfires: Over 1,875 Hectares Damaged in June

 

In June, Türkiye’s Çanakkale witnessed 132 fires, with 31 forest fires and 101 non-forest fires, resulting in significant damage. The forest fires burned 658 hectares, while non-forest fires affected 1,217 hectares. In total, 1,875 hectares, equivalent to 2,625 football fields, were damaged.

Fires occurred in various districts, including Ayvacık, Bayramiç, Biga, Yenice, Çan, Eceabat, Gelibolu, and Lapseki, marking a rapid start to the 2024 fire season in Çanakkale.

Çanakkale Forest Regional Director Enver Demirci stated, “660 hectares of our forest area was damaged. Our region had a difficult time in terms of forest fires in June. 31 of these 59 fires broke out in June. An area of 658 hectares was damaged in June. Additionally, we responded to 169 non-forest fires by the end of June. Hopefully, July and August will be calmer. We think we will get through it without any trouble.”
