China’s ‘Rooftop Rain’ Beats the Heat

As intense heatwaves continue to sweep the globe, a residential complex in Yuncheng, China, has unveiled an innovative way to stay cool by spraying massive clouds of mist from its rooftops. By absorbing heat as the water droplets evaporate, the system rapidly and naturally lowers the surrounding air temperature. Highlighting its incredible effectiveness, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning shared a viral video of the technique, noting that the so-called “roof rain” system “lowers the surface temperature by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius in a few minutes.” While similar misting systems were first introduced during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and are frequently used to protect construction workers, this refreshing residential adaptation is now capturing global attention.
