Clashes Erupt in Kosovo Over Special Court Law

Clashes broke out between protesters and police outside the Kosovo parliament as demonstrators demanded swift legislative amendments to the Special Court law following the Hague’s rulings against former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders. The situation escalated into turmoil when protesters attempted to breach parliamentary barriers, threw objects at the building, and prevented lawmakers from leaving. Although the parliament unanimously approved the bill in its first reading with 91 votes, the extraordinary session ended before a mandatory second vote could take place. The legislative standoff has deepened an ongoing political crisis between Prime Minister Albin Kurti and opposition leader Bedri Hamza, who disagree over tying the court law to a looming October 6 deadline for electing a new president.
