Between 2019 and 2023, Lake Van, recognized as the world’s largest soda lake which is located in easter Türkiye, underwent substantial water depletion attributed to the effects of global climate change. Recent autumn rainfall was initially seen as a potential remedy for the lake’s diminishing levels. However, experts caution that while short-term rainfall may impact the lake’s level, the continued trend of intense summer evaporation will persistently contribute to its decline in the long run.
The decreasing water levels in Lake Van have led to the emergence of underwater stalagmites known as ‘microbialites’ in the area, a visible consequence of the water loss.
