collapse at metro construction site in brazil

A collapse occurred after an accident in the construction of the metro tunnel under the Marginal Tiete highway in the north of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the accident, a part of the highway was destroyed due to the collapse, while the construction site was flooded. The Marginal Tiete highway, which completely collapsed after the accident, was closed to traffic, according to reports.

At a press conference, Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria stated that the accident occurred as a result of damage to the waste water pipe during the subway’s construction. However, the Spanish company Acciona that builds the metro, stated that the waste water system was not damaged in the accident and that the accident occurred as a result of the recent heavy rains and erosion in the region. According to firefighters, it is still unclear whether the incident was caused by a sewage explosion or a nearby river bed. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.
