After the announcement that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would hold a meeting in Accra, Ghana, to discuss the Niger crisis, hundreds of Nigerian coup supporters took to the streets in the capital, Niamey. Opposing the West African bloc formed around the French military base near Niamey, the protesters chanted “Down with ECOWAS” and held banners that read “Down with France.” Many protesters waved Russian and Niger flags and chanted their support for the country’s new leader, General Abdourahmane Tchiani.
