At least 38 people have died and 374 were injured after Tropical Cyclone Gezani struck Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, authorities said. The National Office of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) reported that more than 37,000 homes were damaged and over 18,000 were completely destroyed, with severe impact in the eastern city of Toamasina.
The government declared a national state of disaster as the storm affected 22 locations across five regions. President Michael Randrianirina said nearly 75 percent of Toamasina was destroyed, adding that the crisis exceeds what Madagascar can handle alone.
