Cyclone Gezani Kills 31 in Madagascar

At least 31 people have died and 36 were injured after Tropical Cyclone Gezani struck Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, authorities said. The country’s National Risk and Disaster Management Office reported that most deaths were caused by collapsing houses as the storm tore off roofs and downed power lines and trees.

President Michael Randrianirina said nearly 75 percent of the city of Toamasina was destroyed, describing the situation as “beyond what Madagascar can handle on its own.” He called the devastation a national disaster.
