The death toll from Hurricane Helene, the category 4 level storm that hit the US states of Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina, has risen to 189. Ninety-five people died in North Carolina, which was hit the hardest by the hurricane, 39 in South Carolina, 25 in Georgia, 19 in Florida, 9 in Tennessee and 2 in Virginia. The search for dozens of missing people continues in a total of 6 states.
Helene has been the deadliest hurricane to hit the US since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which killed 1,392 people.
