Death Toll from Stampede During Hindu Festival Rises to 30

Indian authorities reported that the death toll in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Festival, one of the biggest Hindu festivals held every 12 years, in the city of Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh has risen to 30 and the number of injuries to 60.

Authorities also stated that the stampede occurred when a group tried to break through police barricades to reach Sangam Point, where the Ganges River meets the Yamuna and Saraswati rivers.

More than 400 people were killed in a stampede at the same festival in India in 1954.
