The death toll from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Pernambuco state, northeast Brazil, is rising. According to a statement issued by the Brazilian government, 126 people’s bodies have been found with two people still missing. 9,302 people were left homeless, and the search and rescue efforts for the two missing people continued, the statement reads.
Pernambuco state officials announced that the disaster caused destruction in 51 cities, especially in the city of Recife, and a state of emergency was declared in 31 cities, while a total of 111 shelters were established across the state for homeless citizens.
