The military junta in Myanmar announced that the number of those who lost their lives following the 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude earthquakes yesterday had risen to 1,002 and the number of injured had climbed to 2,376.
Authorities said that most of the deaths were recorded in Mandalay, which is close to the epicenter of the earthquake.
Following the international call for help made by the junta, China, India, Malaysia and Russia were the first to launch support teams and food aid efforts. The United Nations announced a $5 million emergency aid fund to support Myanmar. New Zealand announced that it would provide $2 million in aid. South Korea stated that it would initially provide $2 million in humanitarian aid to Myanmar.
