Death Toll Rises to 132 in Brazil’s Largest Anti-Gang Operation

The death toll from Brazil’s massive police operation against drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro has climbed to 132, including four police officers. Residents accused authorities of carrying out mass executions after bodies were gathered overnight in Penha Square.

Officials said the operation, targeting the Red Command gang, had been planned for two months. Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said President Lula da Silva was “shocked” and called for coordinated action against gangs. The UN Human Rights Office said it was “appalled” and urged an immediate investigation.
