Debris of Demolished Building Destroys Classroom Wall in Mersin, Türkiye

Demolition caused earthquake panic: Debris destroyed the wall of the course center while students were inside

In the Yenişehir district of Mersin, one of the cities affected by the two devastating earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, debris of an old building that was being demolished in a controlled manner fell on a neighboring course center, destroying a wall of a classroom where students were studying. The incident left 2 people slightly injured.

“The demolition caused a jolt like an earthquake with a magnitude of almost 6. I immediately ran downstairs to the children. The walls of the second floor were destroyed. There were minor injuries; some were taken to the hospital. All the children were incredibly scared,” said a parent.

It was learned that the demolition work was stopped by the police teams before the incident, but it was continued without permission after a while.
