Earthquake shakes greek island in southeastern mediterranean

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred at 08:32 off the Greek island of Karpathos. The earthquake, which occurred off the coast of Karpathos Island in the southeast of the Mediterranean, was also felt in Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, TRNC and Israel. The National Observatory of Athens announced that the earthquake occurred 127 kilometers southeast of the island of Karpathos in the Mediterranean and 58 kilometers deep, and that no loss of life or property was reported.

Professor Efthymios Lekkas from the University of Athens, Geology and Natural Disasters Management, confirmed that the earthquake in the area had a wide seismic impact. “It is a strong earthquake and therefore it is normal to be felt in a wide area. We don’t expect tsunamis or aftershocks,” Efthymios said.
