Ecuador Battles Forest Fire

A major forest fire in Quito, Ecuador’s capital, has prompted school closures and the evacuation of at least 100 homes. Two firefighters were injured as they battled the blaze in the Guapulo region. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa cut short his trip to the United States, where he was attending the UN General Assembly, to manage the crisis. Noboa has deployed the army to assist firefighters and warned that if arson is confirmed, perpetrators will face terrorism charges. Quito’s Mayor Pabel Muñoz said the fire is expected to continue throughout the night. Public employees have been instructed to work remotely as a precaution.
