Egypt Holds First Phase of Parliamentary Elections

Voting continues in Egypt’s first phase of House of Representatives elections across 14 cities, including Giza, Alexandria, and Luxor. More than 35 million people are eligible to vote in this stage, which ends tonight at 9 p.m. local time.

The elections will fill 596 parliamentary seats — half through individual contests and half through party lists — with one-quarter reserved for women. Results for the first phase will be announced on November 18. Analysts say the new parliament will play a key role in shaping Egypt’s political direction after President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s current term ends in 2030.
