Ekşisu Marshes: A Vital Refuge for Migratory Birds in Türkiye

The Ekşisu Marshes in Erzincan, Türkiye, serve as a crucial stopover for nearly 300 bird species on their migratory route between Africa and Asia. Declared a national wetland 17 years ago, this protected area supports hundreds of species, including cranes, storks, pelicans, and geese, providing a haven for rest and rejuvenation. With its diverse vegetation and favorable climate, the marshes are also home to rare bird species, 52 reptile and mammal species, and 149 bird species year-round. The reed-rich environment offers a safe habitat for nesting, feeding, and sheltering, essential for these birds’ survival on their long journeys.
