An 88-year-old man in the Gülyalı district of Ordu, northern Türkiye, continues basket weaving decades after learning the craft as a child using hazelnut branches. Haki Atasever said he once supported his family through basket making and construction work but now weaves mainly to pass the time as demand has declined. Unable to work with wood due to age, he has switched to plastic materials, saying they are easier to weave. “I’m not weaving to sell anymore, I’m weaving to keep myself busy,” he said.
