Endangered Pearl Mullet Faces Perilous Journey and Threats in Türkiye’s Lake Van

The endangered pearl mullet, endemic to Lake Van, continues its challenging journey to reach freshwater sources. Despite low water flow, the fish persist in their remarkable migration. Authorities are taking measures to protect them from poaching during the breeding season. Visitors at Deli Çay fish dam witness this arduous journey and the unique landscape. However, this year’s reduced water flow has diminished the fish’s abundance. Furthermore, pearl mullets face additional threats from seagulls, who prey on them during their migration.
