Thousands of homes and businesses in England lost power due to the Eunice storm, and schools and businesses were reported to be temporarily closed. Highways were closed, and train, bus, ferry, and airline services were canceled across the country. Meteorology Directorate in the country issued a “red alert,” while authorities urged citizens to “stay at home,” stating that the storm caused the highest wind speed ever seen in England. The wind speed of 122 miles per hour recorded on England’s Isle of Wight due to storm Eunice set a new national record, breaking the previous record of 118 miles per hour set in Cornwall on 15 December 1979.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has chaired the country’s Civil Contingencies Committee (COBRA) due to the severe storm. “We should all follow the advice and take precautions to stay safe. I thank everyone for their efforts during this period,” Johnson stated.
