Escape Attempt Leaves 129 Dead in Democratic Republic of Congo

A stampede broke out during an escape attempt planned by prisoners at Makala prison in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo. A total of 105 prisoners lost their lives. In addition, 24 prisoners who were stopped with warning shots were killed. Authorities said that there were also 59 injured more.

According to the latest report published by Amnesty International, Makala, the country’s largest prison with a capacity of 1,500 people, houses 12,000 prisoners, most of whom are awaiting trial.
