On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union approved its 16th sanctions package, targeting Russia’s shadow fleet, banks, and military-related industries. The new measures blacklist 48 individuals and 35 entities.
The sanctions expand restrictions on Russia’s oil tankers, adding 73 more vessels to the list, bringing the total to 153. For the first time, the EU has also imposed a transaction ban on financial institutions outside Russia using the SPFS payment system.
Additionally, export restrictions have been placed on 53 organizations supporting Russia’s military, and eight media outlets, including Eurasia Daily and Lenta, have been banned in the EU for spreading propaganda. The EU stressed that these measures aim to weaken Russia’s war capabilities.
