EU wary of ban on Russian gold

The G7 Leaders’ Summit continues on its second day at Elmau Palace in Bavaria, Germany, where leaders discussed the new sanctions against Russia. EU countries did not respond positively to the request of the USA, Canada and the UK to stop gold imports from Russia.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the German press that the import ban on Russian gold is still being discussed, but that such a decision cannot be made at the summit and that the views of European Union partners on the issue should be sought. According to German Chancellor Scholz, the G7 countries agreed on an action plan and financial assistance to combat the world’s rapidly rising food prices. Scholz also mentioned that significant efforts are being made to get Ukrainian grain to global markets. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky attended the meeting via video conference and stated that they needed more help.

The G7 is expected to make an official statement on the ban on Russian gold tomorrow.
