More than 100 German farmers, who are against the coalition government’s plan to reduce agricultural subsidies, gathered last night at the pier in Schluettsiel, where the ferry with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck would arrive. Flocking to the pier, the farmers attempted to get on the minister’s ferry, which prevented him from getting off the ferry. Habeck sailed again to return to Hooge Island, while German police intervened against the protesters. The minister came back to the mainland on another ferry at night.
Some top officials said the ferry blockade was “shameful” and that it discredited the cause of many peacefully protesting farmers.
