Fine Issued for Picking Protected Water Lilies in Türkiye

Authorities in Türkiye’s Biga district are imposing fines of 387,141 TL  ($12,000) on those caught picking protected water lilies in Nilüfer Lake, located in the village of Kalafat. This measure aims to prevent damage to the area’s biodiversity.

Nilüfer Lake, covering 2 acres in Kalafat village, is famous for its water lilies, also known as ‘Lotus flowers.’ These flowers, with stems growing up to 1 meter, bloom from May to November, creating a stunning sight for visitors. The lake, designed for ecotourism, includes a forest park and recreational area, boosting tourism in the region.
