Fire on US Navy Ship in Japan Extinguished

A fire aboard the USS New Orleans off Okinawa, Japan, burned for 12 hours before being extinguished. Two US sailors were injured and are receiving treatment.

The Japan Coast Guard said four Japanese vessels assisted overnight after the US renewed its request for help. The cause of the fire on the 200-meter amphibious transport ship is under investigation. The vessel is anchored at the White Beach Facility, where most of the 54,000 US troops in Japan are based.
