flooding cripples power lines in Bangladesh’s Sylhet

Flooding occurred in Sylhet, Bangladesh, as a result of heavy rains. The city of Sylhet has been without power since yesterday after the Barikandi Electricity Sales and Distribution Center was damaged in the flood. Many houses, educational institutions, agricultural lands and workplaces were flooded in the city. There was also a fuel shortage as a result of flood waters leaking into the city’s oil depot, and a large amount of rice in mills on the banks of the Surma River was spoiled.

Food aid was provided to the flood-affected areas in the city of Sylhet and barricades were set up in the regions, a local official said. In the statement made by the Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB), it was stated that the river waters had never risen this much since 2008, and that if the rains continued, the situation in the city would worsen.
