Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Karl Nehammer, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg took over as interim prime minister of Austria to serve until a new coalition government is formed.
Schallenberg, who has served as Austrian Foreign Minister since 2019, briefly served as prime minister for approximately 2 months in 2021 following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz.
Karl Nehammer from the Austrian Freedom Party, which came first in the September 29 general elections, announced his resignation on January 4, stating that no agreement had been reached on fundamental issues in the coalition talks and that the talks had been terminated.
