Forest Fires Break Out Near Athens

Forest fires broke out in the village of Varnava and the town of Megara near the Greek capital Athens yesterday. The flames quickly grew due to the wind and hot weather, and locals were evacuated.

Athens Observatory Research Director Kostas Lagouvardos said the coming days were critical, noting, “What makes the situation so dangerous is the long-lasting drought and high temperatures.”
