The death toll from clashes between police and protesters who took to the streets of the capital Pakistan, Islamabad, to demand the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was imprisoned on various charges, has risen to 14, including six security forces. The violent clashes ended when officials from Khan’s party, the Pakistan Movement for Justice (PTI), and the supporters retreated from the streets.
The party said in a statement: “We are temporarily suspending our peaceful protests due to the government’s brutality and plans to turn the capital into a ‘slaughterhouse’ for unarmed civilians.”
It is reported that hundreds of people were detained during the protests.
