France Sees Mass Protests Against Austerity Plan

Roads and transport lines across France were blocked in “Bloquons tout” (“Let’s stop everything”) protests against the government’s €43.8 billion austerity package. Police reported 95 arrests in Paris and 8 in Brest as clashes broke out.

The plan includes cutting public holidays, freezing pensions, reducing public service staff, and lowering social benefits. Protesters say it will sharply reduce living standards. Teachers and students also joined, striking and blocking schools.

Authorities deployed 80,000 security personnel, helicopters, and drones. Intelligence services estimate more than 100,000 people could take part, with demonstrations spreading nationwide. Polls show nearly half of the public supports the movement.
