French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French navy intercepted the oil tanker “Deliver” off the coast of Sicily for violating maritime law. The vessel is part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which utilizes older, unflagged ships to bypass Western sanctions and generate oil revenue. Sharing footage of marines boarding the ship from helicopters, Macron emphasized, “We will not allow the shadow fleet to circumvent sanctions and finance Russia’s war effort.” He noted that this latest operation demonstrates European resolve to “increase the cost of war for Russia” and support a lasting peace in Ukraine. While France has now seized at least five such tankers in recent operations, Moscow continues to condemn the maritime interceptions as illegal.
